Whilst it is expected that through the sessions participants will inevitably learn and practice using the Spanish language, we aim to create a totally stress free environment with no pressure to learn. The emphasis is always on enjoyment!

Participants will get the opportunity to learn and develop new drama, theatre and Spanish language skills through:

  • Fun theatre games

  • Spanish language drama games

Using Drama & Theatre to teach Spanish

The use of theatre and drama can be thoroughly advantageous in language learning. There is much research and evidence to suggest that drama gives students the opportunity to use natural conversational language in a meaningful context. Some of the benefits include students gaining a better understanding of social context and also a recognition of nonverbal communication. They get to experience and practise language used in specific social contexts, witness and practise gestures and facial expressions, as well as tone of voice. Most important of all, the use of theatre and drama helps to create language learning enjoyment and motivation.

One of the main approaches used to teach foreign languages for this age group known as ‘language sensitisation’,  places the emphasis on fun, developing positive attitudes and basic conversational skills, as well as creating language awareness. It is clear that in general the focus on second language learning for young learners is mainly on enjoyment. Language learning strategies typically tend to include games, role playing, storytelling as well as  the use of rhythm, rhymes and songs, mime, and physical response .

Our activities therefore incorporate exploring narratives, songs, music, all manner of non-verbal language as well as drama activities that are similar to what is known as TPR (total physical response) games. This highly regarded TPR method involves students listening and learning language through movement, a foreign language teaching approach for young learners claimed to be one the least stressful ways for students to learn target language.

Drama & Theatre
Games

Through  our physical drama and theatre games  kids get the chance to learn,  review and produce Spanish vocabulary and phrases whilst playing. By role playing as well as  exploring narratives, play texts and  characters in both Spanish and English they get the opportunity to learn through doing by being exposed to the new language whilst playing.
